Good morning everyone, Andrew from S&D Paving here in Epsom, Surrey. We have moved onto our next job in 2024. This one is a complete patio and garden renovation. We did the driveway on this property quite a few years back now. It could probably do with a jet wash, which we’ll do before we leave. But on this property we’re now moving around to the back garden for the customer.
Concrete Removal
So you can see we’ve got the digger and dumper and mixer here. We’ve got this old paving patio area which is just sitting randomly there and not being used. So we’re going to remove all the concrete from that and we’re going to bring it back down to gravel, extend the same gravel out to that area.
To make a bit of an open space here we’re going to take this sleeper wall out, flick around that way to go straight and join back in with the existing one running across. We’re removing all the decking, that’s gone. We’re doing a new patio area in the corner of the property to where the deck is now all the way down all at one level and around that.
We’ll have to do a retaining wall, obviously to hold the patio in place. That would be a brand new porcelain patio so the customer can use it all at the one level all the one width. Then we’re going to lower the lawn on this side and we’re going to raise the lawn on that side that will incorporate us putting, I think possibly we are removing these, I’m not sure yet.
We’re going to put a sleeper all the way around the edge so we can raise the ground level up. Same here, we’re going to lower down the grass closer to the patio area, and we’re going to raise the grass higher where we have the dips and holes here.
So we’re going to lower it on this end and we’re going to rise it on this end. We’re going to put a row of sleepers along the fence, so it doesn’t damage and go near the fence and we’re going to level this up so the customer and the grandkids can use this a bit more than they can now. Well, that’s the before video. I will update you as the job goes along and I’ll speak to you soon.
Just a little update on our Ewell job. So if you remember from the first video, we removed the decking on this job, putting in a new portion and patio. As you can see, we are mid job and we turned over all the garden, changed all the levels and this is where we’re at now.
Porcelain Paving Tiles
So you have Alton there and he’s starting to do the tiles. The reason we’ve started two rows out is we’re leaving this free for access for the digger and dumper. We’ve measured out from the wall exactly two tiles, exactly the grout lines, and we’ve left that free and then we’ll lay that. That’ll be the very last one to lay once we’ve finished the job.
We’re putting a patio all the way out down to there. As you can see, all our slabs are laid on a full bed and primed as well. We’ve set up our string line here and we’ve squared it off the house. We’ve put a lovely big foundation in. We’ve put a retaining wall, which will be concrete block, behind for the strength and then we’re going to face it with a brick very similar to the property that runs all the way down here We’re just waiting on a tree surgeon to come now and he is going to stump grind these three because they they’re not going to be taken out as they’re so big.
We’re going to back fill them with some hard core and concrete on top as you can see. We’ve concrete based all this patio – got six inches of concrete along here where it’s been filled up quite a bit. It’s very good procedure to do concrete cause as you know, when you fill the ground up, we’ve probably put three feet of hardcore in here and six inches on top of concrete.
So it’s wet concrete base – it’s definitely a good move to do it. So that’s what we’ve done here. And then you can see in the lawn, we’ve completely turned it over with the digger. We’ve started putting a hard standing base here. We’re going to have a gravel pathway with some landscaping edges leading down to the gym area.
New Turf Installation
As you can see, we’ve completely turned this all over and we’ve changed all the levels. It was very steep, running very much off. We’ve lowered it on one side, raised it on the other. We’ve added a sleeper in along the fence. If you can see down there, they stopped the side going against the fence so we could raise it.
We have 20 tons of grade one topsoil here, all screen topsoil ready to be laid over the original topsoil to get our final levels. That’s it for now. I will give you an update later in the job.
Just giving you another update on the job in Epsom Ewell. So as you can see from the last video we have removed all the concrete, removed all the old gravel, we have re gravelled and we’ve lowered the sleeper wall down. New patio has been fitted, just getting ready to grout. We’re doing the outside edges before we do the grout. You can see it’s all in now flush with the existing terrace.
Brand new turf lawn, completed all the way around. We’ve removed the decking here in the corner as well. We’ve put in a gravel footpath leading from the patio down to the gym area and we’ve also removed this decking because it was rotten. The customer didn’t know what to do with this area but he decided to put a concrete shed base there which he’s going to put something on in the foreseeable future.
We’ve just put some gravel around to be clean and tidy for now. He might change this area in the next phase of the job, but that’s it for now. As you can see, a lovely new turf lawn is being fitted. We’ve completely altered and changed the fall of the lawn so you have a nice flatter surface now than what we had before. You can see we’ve just added a step in so if the customer wants to get on from this end of the patio they can and we’ve removed the trees that were there.
